Sales Talent Assessment

Sales hiring deserves rigour, not guesswork

Volume hiring does not mean low standards. STA identifies the eight dimensions of sales success in forty minutes, combining AI-assisted scoring with human review to build predictable sales teams.

The problem

Why traditional sales hiring fails

Sales hiring is a volume exercise, and volume tends to erode rigour. Roles are open, targets are live, and the fastest process wins the argument. The cost arrives later: missed quota, a ramp that never completes, a team carrying someone else's number, and the churn that follows when people stop believing the bar is real.

Most sales interviews reward fluency and charisma. Both are genuine skills, both are unevenly distributed, and both are heavily rehearsed by candidates who interview often. A confident narrative about a closed deal tells you how well someone tells a story about selling, which is not the same as how they behave in week six of a slow quarter.

The outcome is familiar: strong opinions, weak comparability. Two managers back two different candidates for reasons neither can put on paper, and nobody can explain six months later why the hire did not work.

  • Charisma predicts interview performance, not sales performance.
  • You cannot scale hiring decisions on gut feel.
  • Bad hires in high-leverage roles reshape culture and forecast.
Volume without rigourSales hiring runs at pace, so the assessment step is usually the first thing dropped. Quota, morale and retention pay for it later.
Charisma biasMost sales interviews reward fluency and warmth — performance skills that are distributed unevenly and rehearsed easily.
No structured evidenceYou finish the process with a strong opinion and nothing consistent to compare one candidate against another.

How it works

A fully online assessment built for sales teams

The Sales Talent Assessment is completed entirely online in around forty minutes, on any device, with no proctoring and no scheduling. Candidates can pause and return using the same link, so the assessment fits around a working day rather than interrupting one.

It measures eight dimensions of sales success: commercial reasoning, achievement drive, prospecting resilience, customer insight, influence judgement, learning agility, execution discipline, and integrity and trust orientation. Each dimension is defined behaviourally and evidenced by more than one item type.

The form combines situational judgement scenarios, forced-choice patterns that resist impression management, reasoning items, ranking tasks, written responses and risk indicators. Different formats catch different things; together they are far harder to game than any one of them alone.

AI-assisted scoring produces a draft against a published rubric, and a trained human reviewer confirms or overrides it before release. The result is a comprehensive, defensible profile of sales capability and behavioural fit.

What we measure

Eight dimensions of sales success

STA measures sales capability across eight core dimensions. Each is defined behaviourally and evidenced through multiple methods.

Commercial reasoning

Interpreting numbers, probabilities and trade-offs to reach sound decisions. Distinguishing high-quality pipeline from inflated pipeline.

Achievement drive

Self-generated motivation towards challenging goals and measurable results. Setting targets beyond assigned quota and persisting through slow periods.

Prospecting resilience

Maintaining effective activity and composure in the face of rejection and setbacks. The ability to recover quickly and re-engage the market.

Customer insight

Reading customer needs, motives and decision dynamics. Identifying the real decision-maker and detecting buying-readiness signals.

Influence judgement

Selecting ethical, situationally appropriate strategies to advance conversations and build commitment. Balancing assertiveness with receptivity.

Learning agility

Extracting lessons from feedback and changing behaviour as a result. Experimenting with new approaches and updating strategy when new information arrives.

Execution discipline

Organising work systematically, prioritising reliably and following through on commitments. Pipeline hygiene and process discipline.

Integrity and trust orientation

Protecting transparency, accuracy and the customer's long-term interest even when it carries a short-term cost. Honest forecasting and truthful representation.

The output

A profile, not a pass or fail

STA returns a profile across all eight dimensions, alongside three risk sub-indices that act as governance signals rather than scores. You see the shape of a candidate's sales capability, not a single number that hides how it was reached.

Every dimension is reported on a one-to-five scale with a stated confidence level, so you know how much weight a result deserves before you read what it says. Where the evidence is thin, we say so rather than filling the gap with a confident-looking figure.

Risk signals — inconsistent responding, low effort, integrity concerns — are flagged for human review. They prompt a closer look and a better interview question; they never trigger an automatic rejection.

Reports export as a branded PDF suitable for sharing with a hiring manager, and cohort views support team design: where a pod is strong, where it is thin, and which dimension you should hire for next.

Why this matters

The quiet markers that predict sales success

How a candidate handles a genuine trade-off, what they do when the answer is no, how they describe a customer who wasted their time, whether other people appear in their reasoning at all — these are quiet signals with long shadows. They are hard to perform on demand, and they travel with the person into the territory.

STA surfaces them deliberately, through structured scenarios that force a choice between plausible options and judgement-based items where the socially attractive answer and the effective answer are not the same.

This matters most in hunter and SDR roles, where the job is mostly rejection and the difference between a good month and a bad one is how quickly someone re-engages after being turned down. Resilience is difficult to read in an interview and straightforward to observe under structured conditions.

The result: you hire for sales capability, not interview performance.

  • Response to refusal

What happens after the third no of the day.

  • Trade-off behaviour

Which number gets protected when something has to give.

  • Attention to the customer

Whether the buyer's interest survives the pitch.

  • Forecast honesty

Whether the pipeline is described or decorated.

Scale

Fully online. AI-assisted. Human-reviewed.

STA is designed for the realities of volume hiring. Candidates complete it in their own time, pause and resume through the same link, and need nothing installed. There is no proctoring and no scheduling overhead for your team.

AI-assisted scoring removes the manual effort of reading and rating written responses at volume, while human review keeps quality and accountability where they belong. A reviewer confirms or overrides each draft, with a recorded rationale.

Results export as branded PDFs for individual decisions, and aggregate into cohort views for team design and benchmarking. Every access is recorded in an append-only audit trail.

Built for volume

Forty minutes per candidate, fully online, on any device. Candidates can pause and resume, and no proctoring is required.

AI-assisted, human-reviewed

Automated scoring handles the repetitive work; a trained reviewer confirms or overrides written-response scores before release.
